Beatport has built a formidable brand, but is it really the best place to buy dance music?
Beatport has built a formidable brand, but is it really the best place to buy dance music?

Digital DJ Tips reader Christoph from Germany writes: “My question is about why should people buy on Beatport if the track is not Beatport-exclusive. Every other store is cheaper and has the same file quality. On the face of it, it appears that there is no reason to spend more at Beatport. Is there anything more Beatport can give you that others, e.g. iTunes store or Amazon MP3, can’t?”

Digital DJ Tips says:

The short answer is: No, you’re not going to go wrong if you choose to go and buy where the file is cheapest, as long as it’s a legal store. Bear in mind that iTunes will supply you AAC files not MP3s, but the quality is the same. Beatport attempts to provide the best experience possible for dance music fans, in the hope you’ll get used to the convenience and the environment and buy from them.

Of course, it also attempts to sell a deeper selection of tunes in its specialist areas, meaning you may have to buy from there if it has an exclusive. But technically there’s no reason if the tune you want is on iTunes or Amazon, not to get it from there and you want to make the saving. Just to end, I have seen more expensive stores than Beatport, too…

Where do you buy your tunes? Do you shop around, or are you loyal to one supplier? Please share your tips in the comments.
