Digital DJ Tips Platinum Group member Sigmar posted the above picture from an event he was at last weekend where the DJ had his equipment on top of a washing machine. He explained: “This was at a hipster daytime-event, creative people usually gather here to hang out, have a bite to eat and to sell their stuff. There is always some music with DJs playing deep and chilled music…so this DJ booth was actually an intentional thing.”
This is a great photo and it reminded me of when I was first starting out and space in my bedroom was at a premium. Sitting on the edge of my bed with my controller balanced on a dresser table in front of me wasn’t ideal and I couldn’t stand up because the table was too low. I had put my gear on the washing machine and on some piled up boxes in the garage a few times but that wasn’t at all practical. I couldn’t afford to buy a new desk and there was nothing else I could use in the house – or so I thought.
The penny finally dropped when I was talking to my mum in the garden as she was ironing. I realised that I could tailor the height of the ironing board to my needs and there was adequate space on top for my controller and laptop. It all seemed blindingly obvious in the end but I’m sure I won’t be alone in using this most marvellous makeshift DJ contraption. (Indeed, when I mentioned it in the office our head honcho Phil remembered DJing in Marbella on an ironing board set up on a patio a few years back…). Now, an ironing board isn’t the sturdiest of solutions but I have used the same tactic a few times at parties since with no incident, bar a few little wobbles.
Since then I have built a DJ unit from an IKEA bookshelf (something of a rite of passage these days) and repurposed old computer desks to suit my needs. Everyone will have set their gear up on something strange at some point and we are keen to hear your tales.
So, over to you: What’s the weirdest surface you’ve had to set your gear up on? Do you have any handy DIY DJ table tips to share? Let us know in the comments below…
