Pioneer DJ just released the latest version of its Rekordbox music management and performance software. Now at 5.1, the update includes a new Lyric Plus Pack for Rekordbox DJ where song lyrics appear on screen, similar to the lyric videos that you find on sites like YouTube. Lyric mode automatically downloads available lyric data for songs in your library, and they appear onscreen whenever you drop those songs in Rekordbox DJ’s decks. To enable Lyric mode, you need to subscribe to a monthly plan that costs US$7.90/month.
Also included in the update is a brand new Automix feature that lets the app automatically blend tunes in a playlist with beat and phrase-matched accuracy, along with an improved search function for its Related Tracks feature.
It’s a cool idea in theory, and one that DJs who spin with video (ie VJs) would benefit the most from. DJs who spin a lot of karaoke parties may also find this useful. At the moment, it doesn’t seem like you can create your own lyric videos though, meaning you’re tied to Rekordbox’s catalogue of Lyric mode-enabled songs.
