Mixed In Key, creators of Odesi and Captain Plugins, just announced Mixed In Key Studio Edition. It’s a plugin meant to be used within a digital audio workstation, letting DJ/producers analyse loops and samples to find out what their musical keys are. This means you can know which sounds would “fit” in your productions with greater accuracy on a more granular level.

The way it works is you add Mixed In Key Studio Edition to a track with a piece of audio (eg acapella vocal, synth loop, bass loop). You then play back that audio as Mixed In Key Studio Edition analyses it. You’re then shown what musical notes are used, and also the likely musical key of that piece of audio.

We’re fans of the original Mixed In Key app – we’ve used it over the years for DJing – and we also love Odesi and Captain Plugins for producing. Mixed In Key Studio Edition brings the company’s key detection algorithm into the hands of music producers, making remixes and mashups easier and faster to work on by reducing guesswork. It’s also a great companion for tuning vocals when used together with pitch correction software like Melodyne or Auto Tune, and even for tuning drums to the musical key of your production. Watch out for our review of it soon.
