The Pioneer DJ RB-DMX1 lighting interface – demoed here at NAMM 2018 – plugs between your Rekordbox-running laptop and your DJ lighting, giving you control over your lights direct from your DJ software and/or controller, including full automation that you can customise for each and all of your tracks.

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because a similar system called SoundSwitch is available for Serato DJ and Virtual DJ. Essentially, then, if you’re a Pioneer DJ user this is your solution, and if you use Serato DJ or Virtual DJ, SoundSwitch gives you this kind of functionality for DMX lights.

That said, there are differences between the systems (note from the video the way the software contains “track segments” with energy levels, similar to the way Mixed in Key’s software analyses music), and we liked seeing it all being controlleable via your controller pads, too.

We’ll bring you reviews and a head-to-head of both systems as soon as we can.

Have you been hoping something like this would appear for Pioneer systems? Is this the way you think DJ lighting control is going? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
