Denon DJ has announced the Prime Go+, an update to the unique and popular Prime Go standalone DJ unit. It’s a professional-standard portable unit with a built-in battery, metal casing, great sound, wired auxiliary input, two mic channels, and other high-end features.

The new Prime Go+ improves on the original spec with a 25% longer battery life, a new DRM chip that enables Amazon Music streaming (with, intriguingly, more streaming services promised), and a new grey colour scheme as well.

The only downside of the new version is they’ve removed the dedicated Ethernet port from the back of the unit, citing the fact that very few DJs use it. However, if you do want a wired Ethernet port instead of using the unit’s built-in Wi-Fi, it’s possible to add one back again using a USB dongle in the computer USB socket on the rear of the unit.

Is this worth buying?

The original unit proved popular with portable livestreamers, and particularly with mobile DJs wanting a second system for weddings and so on. We’ve got a particular soft spot for it because it was one of the DJ consoles that we used frequently in lockdown to livestream when we couldn’t get into the office, to keep ourselves sane!

We came to love its minimal yet adequate feature set, its reliability, its SD card slot around the front (where you could add an awful lot of music without any outward sign), and just the general fun it was to use.

Good to see slip mode added, a feature we missed on the original.

Some people dislike the idiosyncratic layout and the tiny jogwheels, but if you can see past that, you’re getting a very powerful portable system, which has over the years benefited from all the upgrades to Engine DJ, including sampler, lighting control, Bluetooth in and out, and many more.

For this new one they’ve seen fit to alter very little, even five years on, which is a testament to how good the original design was. So if you’ve been thinking about buying this unit and were unsure whether it would be wise with such an old DJ console, you need worry no more. This is a great time to take the leap, as the Prime Go+ brings the original bang up to date.

  • The Prime Go+ retails for $999, £929 and €1,099. More info on the Denon DJ website.
