You’ll soon be able to control your own light show by spinning with Serato DJ: Serato just announced that its DJ software will be compatible with SoundSwitch, a hardware / software platform that syncs lighting to music. It consists of two things: a hardware box that connects to your lighting rig and to your computer, and software that you use for coding lighting commands into music files. The result is a synchronised light show whenever you drop those songs in Serato DJ.
So instead of leaving the lighting to an operator, or using “intelligent” built-in lighting programs (ie lights that just move to the beat), you can now direct your own automated light show – imagine creating lighting programmes for all your favourite songs ahead of time, and then executing them perfectly at all your gigs just by playing those songs in Serato DJ.
DJ-controlled lighting is an area of growth: Denon DJ’s got its own Stagelink technology baked into the new Denon DJ MCX-8000 all-in-one controller, for instance. Of course, you’ll still need to purchase or rent lighting to make your light show dreams a reality, but because of these developments, we’re seeing the DJ evolve into someone with a broader scope of creative control beyond just music.
