Online music store Beatport is planning to a launch a DJ download subscription service and a cloud locker service for DJs.
A DJ download subscription service would be a direct assault on DJ download pools such as DJ City and BPM Supreme, and could also be seen as a “Spotify with downloads”.
Meanwhile, a cloud locker service – designed to put a DJ’s online playlists with Beatport directly into their DJ software – would be similar to the innovative but ill-fated Pulselocker service, which offered cloud storage for playlists and offline access for when there was no internet connection at gigs.
Taken together – subscription ownership of tracks (if this is what is being cited here) and cloud storage/downloading of tracks – could potentially revolutionise how DJs buy, store and play their music, especially if the cloud locker was opened to music not bought on Beatport too.
New Beatport CEO Robb McDaniels revealed the plans in an interview with trade publication Music Week, and we can expect to see these services being introduced from Q3 2018.
