When Serato announced the beta of Serato Studio, we were given a glimpse into their idea of a bridge between DJing and production. Now with Serato Studio’s full release, we thought it would be cool to show you one of the easiest and most useful types of DJ edits that you can create with Serato Studio: the redrum.

What’s a redrum, anyway?

A redrum is an edited version of a song with more drums added to give the track added energy and power on the dancefloor, or to make it easier to mix into or out of. It can be as simple as adding a louder and heavier sounding kick drum, or as complex as adding a completely different drum pattern to give the song a different feel.

How to make a redrum in Serato Studio

Serato Studio does a great job of simplifying the production process and creating a redrum can be completed quickly in just a few steps:

  1. Add song you’d like to redrum from your DJ library
  2. Break song into 8 bar (32 beat) song sections using cue points
  3. Select drum kit
  4. Select drum pattern type
  5. Create drum pattern by pressing the Make Beat button
  6. Program drums for the song sections you want
  7. Arrange patterns to create song
  8. Export

The redrum edit is a great way to start creating your own versions of songs, and Serato Studio makes that process simple and easy. With the drum kits that are provided and the pre-programmed drum patterns, creating a redrum can be done in just a few steps in no time at all, and it just scratches the surface of what’s possible with Serato Studio.

Do you spin with redrummed tracks? Have you made your own redrums? Do you want to try making them? Have you had a chance to use Serato Studio? Let us know below.
