Beatsource, the music download store collab between Beatport and DJ City, has just launched in beta. Users can sign up (or sign in with an existing Beatport account) to purchase music from its extensive catalogue: since it’s aimed at open format / chart DJs, that means you’ll find genres like hip-hop, latin, R&B, and dancehall. More importantly, Beatsource features playlists curated by respected pro DJs including Kidd Spin of DJ City, DJames from Capital XTRA, and more. Songs start from US$1.29 each for MP3s, with WAVs and AIFFs costing US$0.75 more.
The Beatsource store is the first phase of the platform. Phase two will see it working with Beatport LINK, the music streaming arm of Beatport. That means you’ll be able to access Beatsource’s catalogue from within your DJ app such as Rekordbox DJ and Virtual DJ. The third and final phase will be the launch of Beatsource PROMO, which will be the record pool arm of Beatsource that DJs can subscribe to.
The launch of Beatsource will be welcome news for open format DJs because it’s a one stop download shop for tunes that get heavy rotation in urban and top 40 clubs. While it’s a bit pricier compared to buying from the iTunes Store, Beatsource may have some exclusives later on that won’t be available on other music sites. The bigger and more exciting news here is that, with phase one of Beatsource complete, we’re getting closer to Beatsource integration with Beatport LINK, which means we’ll soon be able to stream Beatsource music straight in our DJ apps and use the Offline Locker feature too.
