As social media becomes more crucial when it comes to promoting yourself as a DJ, learning how to film your sets in interesting ways can help you separate yourself from others doing the bare minimum. One of the most effective ways to showcase your skills as a DJ, and a camera angle that we’re sure you’ve seen plenty of top DJs use, is the overhead performance shot.

Previously this type of angle would take expensive high-end cameras and equipment, but with smartphone cameras getting better, this kind of camera angle can be achieved using a low-cost DIY solution.

What you need and how to do it

The best part of this setup is how simple it is. It only consists of three items:

  1. Smartphone
  2. Smartphone tripod with bendy legs
  3. Desktop microphone boom arm

Once you have all these items putting them together to make the rig is just as simple:

  1. Take the bendy tripod and wrap it around the end of the boom arm
  2. Attach boom arm to the desk over your DJ equipment
  3. Attach smartphone to tripod
  4. Open camera app
  5. Start filming

Finally…

Gone are the days where you needed to spend thousands on camera equipment to get a professional looking performance video. With just your smartphone and a few items you can create your own overhead rig that can get you some of the nicest looking DJ performance videos.

If you are going to take the time to come up with a routine to promote yourself with, you might as well make the extra effort to make it look its best with an overhead rig like this one.
