Using the Denon DJ MC7000 and Serato DJ Pro with the Pitch ‘n Time expansion installed, which allows the “Pitch Play” feature to work, here I take the iconic riff from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and mash it up with David Zowie’s “House Every Weekend”.
There’s lots more at work here than just the Pitch Play function (looping, tight beatgridding of the Nirvana riff, LFO filter effect, using the actual pitch slider to “slow down” the Nirvana riff to give a cleaner “note” to play with in Pitch Play…) but the basic idea of “playing” a riff from one song to tease the melody in using a stab from another (in this case, a guitar chord from the Nirvana riff) is a fantastic trick for huge genre switches in the mix.
