Hey, I've been asked to play a gig for a friends birthday. She has booked out a nightclub and everything so it's going to be pretty high end. be around 200 people there. At first I was all up for it, but when I've been talking to her more, I have a few worries:

    1) I'm a Dubstep/Electro DJ, which she likes. But she is also right into Indie music and stuff so she wants that sort of stuff incorporated too. Just wanted to know how I could fit this into my current mixing style.

    2) The party is 10pm - 2am. Thats 4 hours. I've only ever done a set up to 1 and a half hours, and even then I was struggling with consistency as I haven't done much in terms of "live performances"

I was thinking about potentially asking if I could maybe do an hour, or two at the most and possibly get someone else to do all the Indie stuff? What do you guys think I should do? Let me know ASAP

If it were me, I'd take the gig and learn from it. You've got a chance here to learn about music you wouldn't normally play, and learn a lot about DJing to boot. These kinds of gigs are invaluable for your growth as a DJ.

I think this is a really good question, so I've answered you in a longer PM, which I'll also publish over on the main site for further opinions. Thanks for sharing.

Totally agree with Phil here, been in a couple of similar situations, i play Deep House/bit of Techno, which a lot of my mates love but when you're playin a 30th birthday or watever, not everyones gonna like it! So in the past friends have asked me to play some indie etc. at the start of the nite and go nuts later with watever i want, i accepted the challenge and had a ball! Played lots of Roses, Bowie, Primal Scream, all sorts, at the start of the nite, just loaded them into Traktor straight from iTunes (i'm sure you can get something similar sorted depending on your software?) didnt really worry about beatmatching and tempos, (trust me, your audience wont care either) and just enjoyed it :) Even started looping and Fx'ing a bit of 'Fools Gold' and it went down a storm, so basically just have fun with it, then later in the nite when everyones well on their way, start playing your own stuff, (which i'm sure will go down well as you said your friend likes your Dupsteppy stuff anyway).
Anyway, best of luck with the gig, hope you give it a go and just have fun with it! (and let us know how it went afterwards)

    Cheers

Well, I've kind of been hit with a bit of good fortune (I think)

I was talking to her a few days ago, and she said she has 3 DJ's including me.

One being a Birthday (disco) kind of DJ
One to play more Indie/Charty stuff
And me, to rip their face off with bass :p

So I'm guna have about an hour and a half set at 12:30 till 2 (when the party ends) so it should all go down perfectly.
