Over To You: What DJ Effects Do You Use?

Effects
Effects can add an extra layer of creative expression to a DJ performance, and in today’s question we ask what your go-to DJ effects are. Erick Morillo, pictured above, loves using effects to create drama and tension that wouldn’t otherwise be there.

Today’s question will come from a certain Digital DJ Tips reader – me! I wanted to ask all of you what your “go-to” effects are in your choice of DJ software.

I’ve been using the “big three” DJ apps over the years (Traktor, Serato DJ, and Virtual DJ). While they’ve all got their own unique effects and effect chains (Virtual DJ 8 has the most comprehensive in terms of effect control tweaking and daisy chaining, in my opinion), I find myself consistently using an “echo out” delay that stops the playback of the currently playing track, which echoes it out so I can drop another one in. An example of this is Combo FadeEcho in Serato DJ, the Mute Sound button in the Echo extended menu in Virtual DJ 8, or Echo Freeze in Traktor.

I love using this when mixing multi-genre DJ sets because it lets me spice up a transition instead of just cutting from one song to the next. Other effects in my chain include a reverb that I can dial in during buildups to add tension, which is great for creating anticipation for an imminent drop.

So, over to you: What DJ effects do you use most often, and when do you use them? Do you have a special effects chain set up in your DJ software that you use time and time again that you’d like to share with our readers? Or do you swear by hardware effect units like the Pioneer DJ RMX-1000? Go ahead and tell us below.
