Facebook music
Now your mix is uploaded, it’s time to get it out to the masses…

If you’ve just joined this series, in the first three parts we set up Facebook and Twitter accounts, customised our pages to make them look good, and uploaded our DJ mix to free hosting provider Mixcloud. They’re all linked to at the end.

In this fourth and final part of our series, we’re going to look at how to promote your DJ mix now it’s online and ready for the public to listen to, in a way that hopefully ensures as many of them actually do that as possible.

When you’re ready to promote your mix, you want to include more than just the Mixcloud link. Remember, it’s very important to get your fans excited about what you’ve got to say. One technique is to include some of the artists or tracks that are going to be in the mix, so people who recognise the artists can get excited about it. You might say for example, “Check out my new DJ mix, which includes a great new track by Armin Van Buuren” – and then include the link to the mix.

The social media cycle

You can think of social media in terms of “the social media cycle”. When you post a link on Twitter of Facebook, it’s being passed on to all your fans and followers. They can they pass it on to their friends, by liking, sharing and retweeting the link. Here’s the magic: If your fans’ friends like the mix or link too, that sends them right back to your page, to see what the fuss is all about – which ends the cycle.

One thing to keep in mind when you’re posting and tweeting is that what works on Facebook, might not work on Twitter. Thus it pays to keep an eye on how your posts are being received and tweaking your approach accordingly

Finally…

Remember, these concepts also apply to other social media outlet as well as Facebook and Twitter. Just experiment to find out what works best in the social media environments you choose to engage with.
